MANILA, Philippines – The P1.3-billion ($27.70-million) rehabilitation of the country’s oldest airport terminal – the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 (NAIA1) – will be ready before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit in Manila in November.
This is the first major renovation of NAIA1 in over 30 years.
"NAIA T1 rehabilitation will be completed by the end of September," Transportation Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal said via mobile phone reply on Tuesday, September 8. (READ: PH might be unable to showcase NAIA Expressway in APEC)
Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Angel Honrado earlier said NAIA1 project involves 6 phases. It is overseen by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and directly supervised by MIAA.
Finishing touches
"As of now, it’s now 99.5% complete," Sagcal said, adding that the private contractor is just doing finishing touches.
In December 2013, the DOTC awardedthe rehabilitation project to DM Consunji, Incorporated.
The project involves structural retrofitting, improvement of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection facilities, as well as architectural works of the decades-old terminal building.
NAIA1 has a passenger load of 8 million annually, almost double its original capacity of 4.5 million passengers.
The DOTC has decided to auction off the rehabilitation deal after its 2010 investigation found faults in the construction of NAIA1 in 1981.
