MANILA, Phiilippines (UPDATED) – The Philippines' Social Security System (SSS) on Friday, August 12, clarified earlier reports that a computer glitch wiped out about 5 years worth of contributions of SSS members.

The SSS said in a statement, "contrary to reports, SSS contribution records for 1985 to 1989 were not wiped out. They were already in the system and were just reposted, paving the way for pension adjustments for qualified pensioners which will be completed in three tranches by June 2017."

The SSS reiterated that its record-keeping system has several layers of protection.

"Apart from the SSS database, members’ records are kept in hard copy as well as in microfilm format. SSS has started the digitization of these records and maintains a disaster recovery site wherein all the SSS records are replicated," it said.

ABS-CBN earlier reported that, "Because of the glitch, the record of contributions of hundreds of thousands of SSS members from 1985 to 1989 were not reflected in the database,"

The number of contributions sent in by an SSS member affects how much he receives in benefits later on.

The SSS advised pensioners to contact the SSS to check if they are eligible for back payments. – Rappler.com
